Empowering Communities Through Educational Technology

Our Head of the Cambridge High School, Dr Sandy Bansal, had the privilege of addressing the Rotary Club of Bugolobi MorningTide at City Royale Hotel, Bugolobi, as guest speaker.

Her address explored a question central to our times: how can technology, from the simplest tools to artificial intelligence, strengthen learning and uplift entire communities?

A few of the reflections she shared:

  • Start with what works. Mobile phones, radio and TV lessons, projectors, computer labs and offline content libraries are already transforming classrooms, and none of them requires AI.

  • AI as a partner in learning. Used well, AI can act as a patient tutor for learners, support those with special needs through reading and translation tools, and give teachers back hours for what matters most: teaching.

  • Honesty about the challenges. Cost, unreliable power and connectivity, teacher training, accuracy, child safety and the widening digital divide must be confronted if technology is to close gaps rather than deepen them.

  • Uganda has already shown the way. From radio lessons during school closures to Rotary-supported solar power and computer labs in Kitoola, the lesson is clear: power and training must come before devices.

  • Her guiding principle: technology supports teachers; it does not replace them. Every investment in technology must also be an investment in people.

Dr Bansal closed with an invitation to Rotarians to adopt practical, sustainable projects, equipping, powering, connecting, training, mentoring and partnering with schools, so that every learner benefits.

At Kabojja International School, we believe that "from chalkboards to chatbots, the goal stays the same: every learner learning." We thank the Rotary Club of Bugolobi MorningTide for the warm invitation and for the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation.
