The summer break at Kabojja International School is the most opportune time for trainings, workshops and refresher courses for the teaching and support staff of Kabojja International School before school re-opens so that learning and instruction are not compromised.

Kabojja International School invests heavily in ensuring that the Teachers and support staff are trained in the latest ways of instruction and ways of dealing with learners to make them enjoy, study and most importantly consider the school as a place of safety, comfort and a haven for education.

The first workshop: ‘Design Thinking’ was conducted by Dr. Susan Crichton, the Dean of the Faculty of Education at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Dr. Susannah-Joy Shuilenberg, a Cross Culture facilitator and Clinical Supervisor as well as a Trauma Specialist who enlightened the staff about how to identify traumatized students and what can be done to help them. The team also included Karyn Veldhoen from NITEO AFRICA as well as Coleen Sulatyski and Shandrea Tesoriere both senior educators from Canada.

Internationally, there is a shift from the ‘Bloom theories’ of education to the ‘Maker theory’ of ‘design thinking’ as an approach to instruction. This school of thinking relies heavily on empathy and the participation of the learner in the learning process. Learning is cognitive and any form of trauma interferes with the cognitive awareness of the learner making it imperative that all Teachers have the right training to observe, identify and know how to deal with traumatized learners.

It was a hands-on workshop and it was invigorating and evolutionary to the way teaching and learning is perceived. The Teacher had to inculcate problem solving skills with creativity, team work and innovativeness to come with tools, resources or metaphors that would aid the learning process with empathy being central. It was most exhilarating and interesting.

The workshop was a success and we are immensely grateful to our facilitators and the time they took off their duties. Kabojja International School is at the forefront of the introduction of Divergent thinking into the teaching and learning process.
